Video game publisher Activision said that "Destiny," the most expensive video game in history, has earned US$325 million in sales in its first five days.

"Destiny," developed by "Halo" franchise creator Bungie, isn't earning sales as fast as the gaming industry's best-sellers such as the first-person shooter "Call of Duty" titles released annually or "Grand Theft Auto V," which was the fastest-selling video game in history.

But if the science-fiction shooter were to be judged as a brand-new independent project, "Destiny" is quickly approaching record-breaking status.

"We believe the $325 million figure represents approximately 5 million units at a blended retail sales price of $65, making it one of the fastest-selling games of all time and likely the best-selling new intellectual property of all time," wrote Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

On Tuesday, Activision announced "Destiny" had already shipped $500 million worth of copies to retailers, online or physical.

The latest announcement made by the publisher about the new game's sell-through rate, or the number of off-the-shelf copies and shipped preordered titles actually purchased, sheds light on what CNET's Nick Stratt has named "a somewhat ambiguous figure in perspective."

"Destiny" was a highly anticipated game, not only because it's the first game after the "Halo" franchise, but also because it's attempting to combine two popular gaming genres: the first-person shooter and a science-fiction universe where players coexist and interact with one another.

Even before its release, the game showed signs it would be successful. The game has always been present on the top weekly pre-order chart, if not the number one, said VGChartz that has tracked Destiny as it became the most pre-ordered game to date.

"Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one," said Eric Hirshberg, head of Activision's game publishing arm.

"We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision's next billion dollar brand."
