GE Renewable Energy has been selected to deliver three 6MW Haliade 150 offshore wind turbines for a 73MW demonstration project in China, expanding the US company's overseas wind offering to Asia.

The company has been selected by the Fuqing Haixia Electricity Generation Co., which is a joint venture between China Three Gorges and Fujian Energy. GE will provide the Halidae 150 machines to the Fujian Xinghua Gulf development, which will use turbines from various suppliers.

The contract includes technical support and two years of operation and maintenance services. Installation of the said wind turbines is expected in the last quarter of this year.

"When finished, GE will be the only supplier in the world to have installed offshore wind turbines in the Americas, Europe and Asia," John Lavelle, GE offshore wind president, said. "We are looking forward to continue a successful offshore journey in China and Asia."

The three nacelles and generators will be made at GE's offshore wind facility in Saint-Nazaire, France, while the towers and blades will be manufactured in China and Denmark, respectively.

GE Renewable Energy is just one of the wind turbine suppliers to join the 73 MW project, which aims to provide enough power to supply the needs of over 20,000 households in the area.

Last January, state-backed Xinhua News agency reported that China's power consumption is expected to increase by 3 percent this year. The growth marks a slowdown from last year when China's power use jumped 5 percent year on year to 5.9 trillion kilowatt hours.

Clean energy such as hydropower, natural gas, and wind power account for 19.5 percent of China's total energy consumption last year, up from 17.9 percent in 2015. The country's wind power capacity also grew in 2016, installing 149 million kilowatts by the end of last year with a total of 19.3 million kilowatts added.
