In an incredible feat of imagination -- and architecture if it can be pulled off -- a New York-based architecture firm proposes building the world's tallest building and suspending it from an asteroid in orbit above the Earth.
Cloud Architecture Office said its specultive "Analemma Tower" will be suspended by super-strong carbon fiber cables attached to an asteroid floating some 50,000 km above sea level. The International Space Station's altitude ranges from 330 km to 435 km above sea level.

Then tower will travel a figure-eight route over the Earth's surface, and return to the same point every 24 hours. It will take a daily loop between the northern and southern hemispheres, including a daily pass over Midtown Manhattan.
Analemma inverts the traditional diagram of an Earth-based foundation, instead depending on a space-based supporting foundation from which the tower is suspended, said the company. Analemma Tower is a proposal for the world's tallest building ever.
This system is referred to as the Universal Orbital Support System (UOSS).
By placing a large asteroid into orbit over the Earth, a high strength cable can be lowered towards the surface of Earth from which a super tall tower can be suspended. Since this new tower typology is suspended in the air, it can be constructed anywhere in the world and transported to its final location.
The proposal calls for Analemma to be constructed over Dubai, which has proven to be a specialist in tall building construction at one fifth the cost of New York City construction.
The company said Analemma can be placed in an eccentric geosynchronous orbit that will allow it to travel between the northern and southern hemispheres on a daily loop. The proposed orbit is calibrated so the slowest part of the towers trajectory occurs over New York City.
Analemma will get its power from space-based solar panels. These panels will have constant exposure to sunlight, with a greater efficiency than conventional photo voltaic installations.
Water will be filtered and recycled in a semi-closed loop system and replenished with condensate captured from clouds and rainwater.
Harnessing the power of planetary design thinking, Analemma "taps into the desire for extreme height, seclusion and constant mobility."
"If the recent boom in residential towers proves that sales price per square foot rises with floor elevation, then Analemma Tower will command record prices, justifying its high cost of construction."
