Toyota said the design faults could trigger a blown fuse that could lead to driving failure. The recall involves the Lexus RX400h models and will be carried out by Toyota Motor China Investment Co Ltd.
According to China's quality watchdog, Lexus vehicles manufactured from April 3, 2006 to December 2008 are included in the recall.
More Recalls
Just last month, Toyota also announced recalling nearly 350,000 Toyota Tacoma trucks manufactured from 2005 to 2011 due to potential seat belt faults. It also ordered a recall of 2,097 Highlander vehicles in China due to air bags defects.
Despite the series of recalls that took place this year, Toyota expressed confidence that it can gain sales momentum in the mainland with the introduction of three redesigned cars meant for the Chinese market.
Toyota spokesman Takanori Yokoi said the company is positive that it can reach its goal of selling 900,000 vehicles in China this year after releasing a sales data that showed 4.2 per cent drop year-on-year last month.
But Yokoi said the sales drop last month was largely due to customers holding off purchasing Toyota cars after learning that that Japanese automaker will be launching three redesigned cars this year.
Three Redesigned Cars to Be Launched
Toyota is set to launch the significantly redesigned RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle, which will be made available this month, and the redesigned Vio and Yaris compact cars that will be launched in the country during the fourth quarter of this year.
Toyota, which has a joint venture with China's FAW Group and Guangzhou Automobile Group, sold 564,600 vehicles in the country from January to August of this year. The figure is down 5.3 per cent compared to its sales last year.
But Yokoi said the company is optimistic of selling 900,000 vehicles this year.
