NBA 2K15 fans will now have the option to put themselves in the game, shaping the way for the future of gaming following a breakthrough announcement of 3D face mapping by 2K Sports on Wednesday.

NBA 2K15 has been promoting the slogan "Your Time Has Come," which now makes perfect sense, as gamers will be able to render shockingly realistic images of their head and face on virtual players inside the game.

The very simple process uses the camera from either the Playstation 4 or Xbox One to capture thousands of little images within seconds and then map your face in 3D.

Users simply begin by staring straight into the camera about six inches to a foot away from the face, and then very slowly turning the head about 30 degrees to the left and then to the right. The user might have to repeat this process, but shouldn't take any longer than a minute to complete the scanning.

According to reports, for best results the room must be well lit, preferably with natural light, and eyes should stay open during the scanning process. The TV screen during the scanning is also complete white to help add some lighting to the face.

The game then begins rendering the 5,000+ images and reference points that were taken at multiple angles and uses the data to mold a complete replica of the users face. This process reportedly only takes about three minutes to complete.

Once you've completed the scan and for some reason aren't completely satisfied with the result, the user is still able to slightly alter the appearance by changing the hair, facial hair, and the ability to sculpt parts of the face.

2K Sports' new face-scan technology could certainly revolutionize the future of the gaming industry.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," said Jeff Thomas, vice president of NBA 2K15 developer Visual Concepts. "I think in the future that every triple-A title is going to want to have some sort of tech like this. It's so much more engaging to actually look at yourself when you're playing a video game compared to some random character."
