The presidents of the world's biggest and second biggest economies discussed bilateral ties and other issues that are of common concerns to the two leaders. Obama arrived in St. Petersburg on Friday while Xi arrived in Russia Wednesday after a state visit in Turkmenistan.
According to President Xi, his meeting with Obama last Friday was reminiscent of their meeting in the US last July where they talked about different issues, including a new type of major-country relations.
Second Meeting In Three Months
It was the second meeting between the two presidents in three months. Their first meeting was in California during the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue. It was not disclosed if the two presidents discuss concerns about Syria
The meeting capped the G20 summit in Petersburg. Aside from the Chinese president, Obama also met French President Francois Hollande during the summit's final day in Russia.
Different Views on Syria
China and the US have been issuing different views regarding the pressing issue in Syria. Obama earlier said he is ready to order an airstrike in Syria following the alleged chemical weapon attacks that killed nearly 2,000 people.
But China opposes any military action against Syria. China's Foreign Mister Wang Yi announced that the country opposes the use of chemical weapons by any country and takes a very serious view of such an action in Syria.
However, Wang said China supports the ongoing investigation being conducted by the United Nations and awaits the result of what it considers as fair and independent investigation to determine the truth as soon as possible.
On Friday, State-owned Xinhua News Agency reported that President Xi urged Obama to consider resolving the Syrian crisis through a political solution instead of resorting to military strike. According to a Xinhua report, the Chinese president told his American counterpart that a military action will not solve the problem in Syria from the root.
