Procter & Gamble recalled Crest's Pro Heath toothpaste following complaints from dentists along with research that showed evidence that it contained a substance deemed dangerous to health.

The recall was triggered by a complaint from dental hygienist Trish Walraven of Texas, who was performing an oral prohphylaxis on a patient when she noticed some odd looking stains located in the patient's gums.

The stains were described as tiny blue specks, which Walraven initially thought as some sort of dental cleaning product the patient uses. As it piqued her curiosity, Walraven did some investigating where she found that other patients had the same stains deeply imbedded in their gums that are said to come from microbeads found in Crest toothpaste.

Microbeads are made of polyethylene, the same material used in producing plastic, and considered dangerous to health. Polyethylene is also considered harmful to the environment because it is non-biodegradable.

Procter & Gamble is undertaking a worldwide recall of its Crest Pro Health toothpaste following Walraven's exposure that the dental product poses health risks despite having been approved by the FDA.

To date, 18 Crest products have been recalled from the market after dental hygienists took notice of the presence of polyethylene. Even prior to the polyethylene issue, many Crest users have complained of dryness, lip-peeling, burning sensation in the mouth area and soreness in their gums.
