Bowie is best known in his five decade career as a prolific musiscian and songwriter with popular hits such as "Changes" and "Space Oddity." Likewise an actor and artist who took part in the design of his own album covers, stage sets and costumes.
'David Bowie Is' will showcase more than 400 items from the musician's personal archives including the legend's never before seen storyboards, handwritten set lists and lyrics and some of his sketches, musical scores, diary entries as well as the muti-colored jumpsuit he wore as "Ziggy Stardust."
The items on display will establish Bowie's creative evolution from his teen-age years in the 1950s to the early 2000s when he retired from his musical journey.
An international tour, the exhibition originally organized for London's Victoria and Albert Museum by curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh is also scheduled to visit Berlin, Sao Paulo and Toronto.
The Chicago visit is the only US stop for the enchanting experience of this multi-media exhibit, incorporating with advanced sound technology produced by Sennheiser.
Another element featured in the exhibit is the original animations, continuous audio accompaniment and video installations.
Even before the opening of the Chicago show, it has sold tens of thousands of tickets not only in the city itself but also outside the state.
The Chicago exhibit it set to open on September 23 and will be available to the public until January 4, 2015.
A documentary about the exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum back in 2013 will be released in more than 100 movie theaters in the US simultaneously with the exhibit's opening day.
Scott Furtwengler, a 50-year old musiscian from Houston, who also plans to see the exhibition said that the diversity of Bowie's style truly inspires him.
"It's pretty amazing to see all his works in one place, the costumes, the lyrics, his notebooks, the set design," Furtwengler said.
"The exhibition is called, "David Bowie is" because Bowie is always evolving and doesn't want to get stuck in the past." Marsh quipped.
