Dragon, it is probably the earliest totem in China. It is supposed to be a notional animal which can fly in the air. It is said that the original human beings, Fu Xi and Nu Guo were the dragon-like creatures with human face and snake body. It is also a symbol of power that the dragon is controlling the weather, according to the legend. Thus, the Chinese are proud of being called "the descendants of the dragon".

It is obvious that the Chinese like the dragon. The emperors had a great passion of the dragon image, and use them a lot in their clothes and other living goods. In the old days, only the emperor families had the right to use the dragon image. If any others use the dragon image, they would be sentenced to jail or death penalty. They believed that they were the son of the dragon, and were sent to cover their dynasties to help the people. On the special festivals or if any disasters happened, the emperors held the memorial ceremony for requesting the assistance from the God of the sky, or the dragon.

Since it is so prevalent that people in the history love digging deep to find out any information of the dragon.  In 1957, an historical bottle was found in Tianjin city. It turned to be a bottle from the New Stone Age. An image of human face and fish body was crafted on the surface of the bottle, which was the initial shape of the dragon, the historians said. After that, a great number of historic remains were found to have dragon-like images on them.

What does a dragon look like? Today it is an animal with the crocodile-like head and snake body with four reptile-limbs. It is good that no one will be sentenced to death penalty when they use the image of dragon today. It is widely applied from the bill to the tiny decorative stuffs.  It does not matter if the dragon exists or not; it is matter that it carries the historical cultural and the blessings to China, at present and to the future.
