The "Mighty Mom" Breast Pumping Toolbelt wowed crowds at the MIT Hackathon and took home first prize last Sunday.

The event brought together around 150 breast pump users, health care and lactation specialists, as well as engineers and designers to collaborate and deliberate on how to create a better breast pump.

The discrete, wearable device was named "Mighty Mom" because as Erin Freeburger, one of the members of team who created the utility belt fondly called "Team Batman,"  "every mom is superhero."

Breast pumps are available in either electric or manual versions. Although a breast pump is meant to mimic the way babies nurse, some women may experience pain or discomfort while extracting milk while using the device.

"Team Batman" won US$3,000 from Vecna Technologies, Inc.

"The breast pump sucks but we all love our babies more. So there seemed to be an obvious need to fix this. And, I think another thing was bringing people's voices to the fore front and realizing that everyone has the same three to five key issues with [the breast pump]," according to Freeburger.

In second place, winning US$2,000 from Medela, was "Helping Hands."

"Pump IO" won US$1,000 from Naia Health for third prize, while a special US$500 prize  for "Outstanding User-Focused Design" from Moxxley went to "Second Nature."

"Team Batman" member Don Blair said they've yet to plan the future of "Mighty Moms." But they'd like to include other ideas and other people they met during the Hackathon to build a better version of the device.

Although the future of the device is still unclear, Pejman Mar Ventures is set to sponsor two of the members of the winning group on a trip to Silicon Valley and pitch their ideas to potential investors.

"If we push it out there, people give their feedback, and people respond, this could really change something," Freeburger said.
