3D product designer Noah Hershberger has created rooms inspired by beehives and aptly called, "The Queen B." These homes are designed so that people can stay on planet Mars.

The design has many features that are essential for living on Mars. The two-bedroom version of the apartment for instance is hexagonal in size, containing two baths and basic appliances.

In addition, the walls of the apartment will be able to withstand -80 degree temperatures, constant space radiation, and even frequent dust storms. Safety was primary in the creation of these homes.

The building itself - resembling a beehive as well in its hexagonal shape - can be rearranged for multiple configurations. Other rooms available are garden areas, 3D printing rooms, and all the essentials such as kitchens, laundry areas, and even dining areas.

The building is set to be made from 3D printers. The materials used will be a combination of a concrete-like mixture of Mars dust and a binder.

Hershberger got the opportunity to design this building by winning a challenge from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Makerbot.

While designing something so essential for space travel would have needed to be taken care of by rocket scientists, NASA felt the need to seek ideas out of the box. They also wanted to get more people into thinking about what the future would look like.

3D printers are becoming an essential tool for space travel. Apart from the buildings used for staying in distant plants, designers are also planning on using it to replace parts on spaceships, create food, and make a wide variety of tools needed for human life.
