Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be taking on the role of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in the upcoming biopic of Oliver Stone. While there have been no final agreements, both the actor and the director have expressed their willingness to carry on forward.
Stone will be writing and directing the film entitled "The Snowden Files" based on the book with the same title written by Guardian journalist Luke Harding. It is also expected that the upcoming movie will also draw out details from "Time of the Octopus" written by Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden's legal representative.

Production for "The Snowden Files" is likely to take place late this year or in early 2015. This will be first project that Stone will be taking on after he turned his back on plans of creating a movie on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life.
Snowden, a former National Security Agency employee, has been known to expose classified details about mass government surveillance and, consequently, stir up worldwide rage. While the 31-year-old computer professional will be facing a 30-year prison sentence in the US, he has been given temporary asylum while in Russia.
Stone has already been involved in past biographical political movies as he has directed films about former President Bush's war on terror, the Vietnam war, the Watergate break-in and JFK's assassination.
His upcoming movie on Snowden's revelations is expected to compete with a similar film called "No Place to Hide" based on the book written by Glenn Greenwald, the freelance journalist to whom Snowden had shared numerous classified documents in 2013. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who previously worked on "James Bond" films, are set to produce.
Gordon-Levitt, who previously worked on a wide range of highly popular movies from "The Dark Knight Rises" to "(500) Days of Summer", is also up for other forthcoming movies such as "The Walk" in which he will portray high wire artist Philippe Petit.
