The movie will revolve around the story and life of Snowden, a former Central Intelligence Agency employee and technical contractor, who the government charged with espionage against the country after he admitted that he leaked confidential information on mass surveillance operations undertaken by the government officials of the United States and United Kingdom on their own citizens.
People are divided when it comes to categorizing Snowden as either a traitor to his country and a hero. He is currently seeking asylum in the European Union while residing in an undisclosed location in Russia.
Stone and producing partner Moritz Borman are reportedly talking with Snowden's Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, regarding taking elements from his novel "Time of the Octopus" and integrate them into the film.
The said novel centers on an American whistleblower who travels back and forth between the leaker and his lawyer, while awaiting the approval to be granted asylum in Russia.
Aside from "Time of the Octopus", Stone and Borman also bought the screen rights to "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story Of The World's Most Wanted Man" by Luke Harding.
Stone's movie isn't the only Snowden film being produced.
Barbara Broccoli, famed for producing "James Bond", is creating a film based on Glenn Greenwald's book, "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the N.S.A. and the U.S. Surveillance State."
Stone's movie is set to begin production either in late 2014 or early 2015.
During last year's Shanghai International Film Festival, Stone praised Snowden and referred to him as a "hero".
Before he begins filming for the Snowden movie, Gordon-Levitt is finishing production in an untitled Christmas-themed comedy starring "50/50" co-star Seth Rogen.
