World No. 1 Serena Williams and 10th seeded Jelena Jankovic retired on their respective matches at the first edition of the Wuhan Open in China on Tuesday.

This is the Frenchwoman's third consecutive win over Williams this year, first was at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February and then in the recent Wimbledon Championship.
Williams, who will be celebrating her birthday 33rd birthday on Friday, had her blood pressure checked before retiring while up 6-5 against Cornet in the first set.
Cornet will now face Belgian wild card entry Kirsten Flipkens who defeated Australian qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova in three set 6-3 3-6 6-3.
Still another top 10 seeded player fell ill as Jankovic of Serbia retired her match against American Coco Vandeweghe in just five games.
Vandeweghe is set to go up against Caroline Garcia of France who earlier upset 5th seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.
The unpredictable weather might have an effect on some of the top players as 9th seeded Ana Ivanovic also retired her match in the first round against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
In a day filled with upsets, 16th seed Andrea Petkovic also lost her match against Karolina Pliskova in just two set 4-6 4-6.
Pliskova won her second WTA event just last Sunday at the Kia Korea Open in Seoul against American Varvara Lepchenko.
The 22-year-old Pliskova awaits the winner of the match between Italian qualifier Karin Knapp and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
Danish star Caroline Wozniacki however was successful in her match against Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain but just by a hair as both players split the first two sets and battled a tie-breaking set and match in the third set 6-1 3-6 7(7)-6(4).
The eighth seeded Wozniacki will now face Australian Casey Dellacqua in the third round.
