China Pledges $6 Million for U.N.'s Climate Cooperation

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli announced on Monday that Beijing will donate US$6 million to help U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in strengthening the South-South cooperation in combatting climate change.
Zhang, who was sent to New York to represent China during the U.N. Climate Summit on Tuesday, made the pledge during a meeting with Ban.

According to China's envoy, Beijing agreed with the U.N. leader's move to hold a summit for climate change because of the very real threat that the issue posed to the world.
Zhang added that he expects the climate summit to have a substantial and positive effect for nations to cooperate regarding the issue of climate change.
In addition, Zhang said China and its leaders does not take the issue of climate change lightly, and is grateful for the role the U.N. plays in containing its threat.
Zhang also suggested that since the U.N. will be celebrating its 70th foundation anniversary in 2015, it should take the opportunity to strengthen multilateralism in the global community, uphold the U.N. Charter and maintain the post-WWII order.
Meanwhile, the Chinese representative said the international community should defend the principles of cooperation and growth, and ensure that U.N.'s 2015 plan to combat poverty will be implemented next year.
Ban expressed his gratitude for China's support and cooperation, and acknowledged the country's efforts and achievements in combating the global threat.
Additionally, Ban praised China's support regarding the Ebola outbreak and other pressing issues, such as the political situation in Sudan and Afghanistan.
Prior to the meeting of Zhang and Ban, both went to an event where China made a generous donation of a 30-meter global land data cover datasets to U.N. to aid in fighting climate change.
Meanwhile, the U.N. Climate Summit is expected to be attended by over 120 leaders from all around the world, where Ban is expected to urge the heads of state to to take bolder actions in combating the threat of climate change.
