Computer giant Microsoft announced Tuesday it's developing the Wireless Display Adaptor, a device that enables Android and Windows systems to wirelessly send their display to any TV, monitor or projector with a High-Definition Multimedia Interface input.

One of the new features added into Windows 8.1 was the built-in support for Miracast.

With the right blend of video and wireless drivers, machines running on Windows 8.1 can beam their display over a Wi-Fi connection to Miracast receivers.

This enables configuration-free and wire-free connections between computers and Miracast-enabled projectors and TVs. Miracast support has also been added to Windows Phone 8.1, while Android has been supporting the tech since its 4.2 version.

Although it could provide a hassle free connection, the Miracast hardware has been consistently rare, according to Ars Technica's Peter Bright. Most projectors and TVs don't support Miracast, hardware.

Thankfully, however, hardware support is becoming more common although the devices still don't have anywhere to broadcast to.

One way to solve the problem is to make Miracast receivers and hardware dongles that can be plugged into suitable display devices to make it a Miracast machine. The Wireless Display Adaptor from Microsoft will join a number of dongles already in the market.

One end of the adaptor plugs into a USB port on the display device to power the dongle. The other end plugs into the HDMI port to receive the Miracast signal.

The adaptor will be the Miracast bridge that connects the TV, projector or monitor to the Miracast-enabled device.

Microsoft's Wireless Display Adaptor will retail for US$59.95 when it hits shelves in October.

The computer giant's Miracast dongle isn't the first to marketed since the market is already populated by devices from brand name companies such as Asus and Belkin.
