Google Begins Construction of Massive Data Center in The Netherlands by 2016

Google announced Tuesday a four-year plan to construct a massive, new data center in the Netherlands.

Construction begins in 2016 and the data center will open by the end of 2017.

The new 120 megawatt data center spans 44 hectares and will be located in Eemshaven, in the province of Groningen.

Google plans to invest US$773 million (€600 million) in the new facility.

The Eemshaven data center will become one of Google's four data centers in Europe. The others are located in Dublin, Ireland; St.Ghislain, Belgium and Hamina, Finland.

The giant search company chose Eemshaven for its suitable location, mild climate and easy access to Dutch renewable energy supplies. Eemshaven also resides close to a landing station for international cables.

The new project expects to bring 150 permanent jobs to the area once construction is completed.

"We know this area well, there is available land and there is a favorable climate for us," said Francois Sterin, Google's director of infrastructure.

The company plans to use new electrical technology and natural cool air for this gigantic data center.

"The new Dutch data center will benefit from the latest designs in cooling and electrical technology. It will be free-cooled - taking advantage of natural assets like cool air and grey water to keep our servers cool." Google said.

"Our data centers use 50% less energy than a typical datacenter -- and our intention is to run this new facility on renewable energy"
