Hong Kong singer G.E.M. posted a photo of herself on Sina Weibo showing she was driving, starting a debate among netizens about taking photos while driving, which would violate Hong Kong's traffic laws, Mingpao Daily reported Thursday.

G.E.M. posted the photo to show how her first driver looked like. It was the 4th of September, the date she just got her driving license. She also left a message, "Rainy day, it is first time to drive in the street. I can feel the butterflies. Lol!"

She was very excited to share her first time driving, but netizens doubted that she might violate Hong Kong's traffic law against using a cell phone while driving. Some netizens held questions on safety, "Ignoring other people's safety, does she violate the law?" Netizens also criticized her on basic traffic rules and laws. Some netizens worried about G.E.M.'s safety, "Don't post threads on Weibo! Look at the road! This kid is so worrying!"

G.E.M. said that she had read through the transport department's WebPages and said it is allowable to take photos while the car is stopped.

"I was learning driving. The coach was sit beside me. Because it was on red, I asked if I can take photo. I took it after he said okay," G.E.M. said in an interview. "Under the fifth article of Q&A section of the transport department's WebPages, the new law is only applicable when the car is running. So I did not violate the law."

However, a lawyer who says there is grey zone in Hong Kong's traffic law explained, "Cell phones can be used when it does not influence driving, but the car is not fully flameout when it stops on red. The car can move anytime. In this case, she might be charged of maximum HK$2000."

G.E.M. posted another driving photo on Weibo yesterday. Some media have been trying to get in touch with her but have not yet received any response.
