According to the sandwich shop giant, the possible security breach was brought to its attention on July 30 and third party forensic experts were immediately hired to investigate the incident.
In a statement released by the company, initial investigation results showed the possibility that the credit and debit card information of their customers appeared to have been compromised.
The company has yet to reveal the possible number of customers affected by the breach.
In addition, the statement said that an intruder took the company's log-in information by plugging-in at the store's point-of-sale register, and used that information to remotely access the cash registers at several stores in different states from June 16 to Sept. 5.
At present, the data breach has been taken care of, according to Jimmy John's.
The company has installed additional security for its registers and has assured customers of safe transactions in all of its stores.
The security compromise only affected the cards that were swiped at the point-of sale vendors.
Information including the cardholders name, card verification code, and the expiration date may have been obtained by the hackers.
Meanwhile, cards that were used manually or online were not affected by the breach.
The company confirmed that online information, such as the email address and password, remain safe.
Additionally, Jimmy John's said in a statement that they have taken additional precautionary measures to ensure that the breach does not happen again in the future.
According to the company, it values its customers' trust and will continue to secure the privacy of its clients.
