Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted by Reuters as saying that the agreement reached by US and Russia has opened a new perspective on using peaceful method to resolve the chemical weapons issue that Syria got entangled with.

Wang believed that the agreement has cooled down the explosive and present situation in Syria. US President Barack Obama earlier said he was ready to launch a military assault on Syria.

China Calls for Peaceful Solution

But China immediately called for peaceful solution to the crisis, saying military intervention by foreign countries will not resolve the issue.

China said it supports the investigation conducted by the United Nations chemical weapons inspectors to determine the real story behind the alleged chemical weapons attack that killed nearly 2,000 people in Syria.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency, the efforts to defuse the chemical crisis in Syria have returned to the right track with Washington and Moscow reaching an agreement on a timetable for destroying or removing the country's chemical weapons.

Syria's Chemical Weapons to be destroyed by Mid-2014

The deal was reached by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, following long talks that took place in Geneva.

The agreement stipulates the destruction or removal of Syria's chemical weapons by mid-2014 following a comprehensive listing of the country's chemical arms and an international inspection by November of this year, said Xinhua.

Experts said the US-Russia agreement now puts on hold or even lessens the possibility of a military strike that US President Obama avowed days after the chemical weapons attack.

President Obama himself welcomed the framework agreement in Paris but continues to hint that the US will continue to act if diplomacy fails and if the agreement will not be carried out.
