Phil Hughes, pitcher for Major League Baseball's (MLB) Minnesota Twins, missed a bonus of US$500,000 due to persistent rainstorms.

The Twins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks this past game, 2-1. However, the game was bittersweet for Hughes when the game was delayed for 66 minutes.

In Hughes' contract, it is stipulated that if he pitches 210 innings complete innings this season, he would get a bonus for half a million dollars.

However, it really wasn't to be, stopping a heartbreaking two-thirds of the way before completing the final needed inning.

It was the final start of the season for Hughes. He went in following a plan, as he just needed 9 innings.

With one final inning on the ninth inning, the skies opened up and rain began to fall.

When the rain finally stopped, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters afterwards that he will not be using Hughes anymore for the upcoming weekend.

Hughes was fully aware of the situation and the incompletion of his bonus. He was not broken up about it. The only thing he offered was a statement of understanding, saying that some things aren't meant to be.

The right-handed starting pitcher from California is not totally broken by the missed opportunity. His base salary is US $8,000,000. Throughout the season, he had already earned two bonuses of US$250,000 when he reached the 180 and 195 innings.

He also has the distinction of holding the record for strikeout-to-walk ratio, finishing with 186 strikeouts and 16 walks. It came to a ratio of 11.63, the best of all time for all pitchers with a qualifying number of innings.

He is also reported to have recently signed a new contract that will triple his current base salary.
