India’s MOM Spacecraft Successfully Enters Mars Orbit

MOM Spacecraft

It is not just MAVEN that successfully entered Mars' orbit because yesterday, September 24, 2014, India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) Spacecraft arrived into Mars orbit to.

The MOM Spacecraft was completed on October 2, 2013 and launched in the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket in November 5, 2013.

The spacecraft was approved by the Indian government on August 3, 2012 after a US$21 million series of studies was made for the mission

After escaping from the Earth's orbit, it maneuvered to Trans Mars Injection on December 1, 2013 and moved into the path to Mars.

MOM maneuvered three times to make sure that it is aligned to the proper trajectory for Martian arrival.

To date, The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said that MOM is now circling Mars at a nearest point of 421 km and a farthest point of 76,993.6 km.

They also said that the spacecraft will take 72 hours, 51 minutes and 51 seconds to go around Mars's orbit with an inclination of 150 degrees.

According to NASA, the day after MOM's arrival into Mars' orbit, the spacecraft fired 440 N liquid apogee motors for 3.9 seconds.

They said that this confirmed the engines capability for orbital insertion operations that would be done after 41 hours of MOM's arrival into Mars' orbit.

With the success of India's Mars Orbiter Spacecraft, ISRO has become the fourth space agency to successfully send a spacecraft to Mars' orbit.

They plan to thoroughly test the spacecraft in the upcoming weeks. They are also setting up the five scientific instruments that can be found in the spacecraft for systematic observation of the planet.
