The opening ceremony started from speeches by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and a number of climate change advocates, making a call to the world community to act on this global issue.
As United Nations Environmental Program Goodwill Ambassador, Li made a speech in English and expressed her concerns about various risks caused by the global issue and called on the youth to participate in the global mission. Li said it was her ongoing mission to help raise awareness of the environment.
"When I have gained so much of the spotlight from media and support and appreciation from my fans because of my movies, I feel it is important to act on something that is a good cause for the whole society just to show my gratitude," Li said in an interview after her speech.
"It gives me a feeling of taking on real responsibilities, bigger responsibilities," Li said.
Hollywood actor and the newly appointed UN Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio attended the opening ceremony as well. Li introduced her experiences of visiting wild elephants in Kenya, and DiCaprio talked about the global elephant project he is involved in. DiCaprio accepted Li's invitation of working on animal protection together in the future.
Based on Li's years of earnest execution and influence on environmental protection, United Nations Environmental Program specially appointed her to be its International Goodwill Ambassador at the opening ceremony of United Nations Environmental Program Exhibition in Shanghai World Expo on July 4, 2010. She is the first Asian artist to gain the designation.
