Japanese cartoon character Crayon Shin-chan has been running for over two decades and has delighted many Japanese and other worldwide fans.

However, this was not the case in Indonesia after regulators declared the cartoon characters displayed behavior which bordered pornography. Indonesian regulators has warned a local TV station airing the show to censor the cartoon’s bearing of buttocks, skimpy dressed women and other scenes deemed not suitable for young audiences.

Private TV company RCTI airs the Crayon Shin-chan series in the country. The broadcasting authorities in the country already notified RCTI to cut scenes that were deemed indecent or show the program at a later time.

An official from the commission said the cartoon show has already been stopped from airing in countries including Spain and Malaysia. The said official also added the cartoon is not supposed to be viewed by young audiences.

In an interview with Japan-based Asahi Shimbun, Agatha Lily said the characters in Crayon Shin-chan fool around with exposed buttocks. She also added that characters has been nosing in on people’s dates and featured some females who wore seductive clothes.

On the other hand, RCTI said it would not be pressured to censor Crayon Shin-chan, which was first shown in the country in 2000. A spokesperson from the public TV network said they would continue to air the cartoon as the company sees no problem with it.

This is not the first time the Japanese cartoon has challenged cultural awareness upon airing in other countries.

In 2008, Crayon Shin-chan was taken down from airing in India after the broadcasting ministry said it is against profanity and nudity being depicted. South Korea and Vietnam has also censored the cartoon. The cartoon has gained popularity in many countries and has been translated into different languages including Hindi, English and Chinese.
