China has initiated the construction of the fourth Antarctic base, the Taisan summer field camp. The country expands its reach in the South Pole with this new development. Workers from the Zhongshan Station were deployed in the new site to start the construction of the new base. This is the thirtieth mission of the country in Antarctica in the past 29 years.

According to the director of the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, Qu Tanzhou, China is catching up with other countries that previously explored the continent. This is impressive considering that China is a late comer in the region.
So far, China has three existing and operational research stations, namely, the Great Wall, Zhongshan and Kumlu. The planned Taisan summer field camp will be the fourth station once it is completed.
The fourth camp station is intended to guarantee further safety for research scientists, enabling them to venture further in the region at a wider range. Inspections of the prospective sites for the new station will also be conducted.
According to Qu, Chinese scientists are doing research in Antarctica to find out answers about the ongoing global climate change. Expanding the area of research will enable the Chinese scientist to collect better data.
Once completed, the new station is expected to be completed by next year. The Taishan camp will be used starting this month until March of next year. The construction of the facilities is projected to be done within forty days. The station will mainly facilitate the logistics of the research.
Aside from logistical support, the new station will also be equipped with instruments for studying geology, glaciers, geomagnetism and atmospheric science. This is according to the director of science programs for the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, Wang Yong.
According to the design released to the press, the new station will cover approximately 1,000 square meters of area. It will have the capacity to support 20 people.
