Li made the statement during his visit of the First Aircraft Institute, China's premier aviation research center, on Tuesday in Shaanxi province.
Li, who is on tour of Shaanxi to extend his Lunar New Year greetings, ended his inspection tour of the province with this visit to the aircraft institute which is part of the Aviation Industry Corp of China.
The institute designs military aircrafts and is noted for its large transport carriers, bombers and early warning aircrafts. The institute also designs aircrafts for civilian use.
Aviation experts say Li's visit to the institute is part of the government's program to promote Chinese technology products in the world market.
After being briefed on the most recent developments in the industry, the premier urged researchers to have a strong drive to design and produce equipment of excellent quality that can compete globally.
"Key technology and equipment plays a pivotal role as the backbone of the upgrade and improvement of the economy," Li stressed.
Li emphasized the importance of innovation in the quest to further elevate the quality of high-end equipment. The premier said that development of China's aviation should "follow its own way".
Since Premier Li assumed office in 2013, he has been actively promoting China-made high-end equipment to international clients in his foreign trips, including his trips to Thailand and Romania.
While in Shaanxi, Li has in the past days also visited the province's express delivery enterprises; the province's young and elderly in the countryside, as well as the new dwellings constructed for the province's residents who had left their homes to escape harsh natural conditions.
