The meeting of the two presidents took place upon Xi's arrival in Sochi, Russia.  This year's Winter Olympics is the first major overseas sports event attended by a Chinese president.

Xi said that the Sochi Games speaks of Russia's progress toward wealth and abundance.

In their meeting, Putin expressed his Lunar New Year's greetings to the Chinese leader and his people. The Russian president also said that his country and China have been instrumental in establishing security and stability in the world.

According to observers, Xi's presence at the Winter Olympics reflects friendly ties between the two neighbors and that they are not "specific" security threats as Washington has said.

With China and Russia preparing to cooperatively commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the two neighbors share the duty and concern to maintain peace, given Japan's recent attempt not to comply with restrictions, according to analysts.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been observed to be taking measures to amend Japan's pacifist Constitution and revive militarism ever since he assumed his position in 2012. The prime minister also recently received negative remarks worldwide over his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, which venerates those killed during the war even if they were war criminals.

According to Ruan Zongze, China Institute of Internations Studies Vice president, China and Russia both sit as permanent members of the UN Security Council and are both anti-fascist leaders; they therefore share a common stand to respect historical facts.

"Their moves would send a warning to Japan," Ruan said.
