James Comey, director of the United State's Federal Bureau of Investigation, slammed Apple and Google on Thursday for creating new types of data encryption for smartphones.

While the security of the user has been the priority of the new developments, the smartphone makers have generated algorithms which are so secure that authorities would not be able to gain access the information stored on the devices, even if they have legitimate search warrants.

"There will come a day when it will matter a great deal to the lives of people ... that we will be able to gain access" to such devices, Comey told reporters in a briefing. "I want to have that conversation [with companies responsible] before that day comes."

Law enforcement officials across the U.S. also have similar concerns. The police have said that the capability of searching through web histories, messages and pictures on handsets is crucial to solving a wide range of crimes, from child pornography to murder to possible terrorist attacks. Law enforcement's easy access to data on smartphones may be drawing to a close as tech firms continue to put up stronger security defenses.

Comey's statements came after Apple announced in the previous week that its iOS 8 is completely encrypted that even the company is powerless to unlock iPads and iPhones for the police. Google, on the other hand, is leaning towards an automatic form of encryption for the firm's latest version of the Android operating system.

Authorities are frustrated against Apple, which is quickly providing devices with encryption capabilities to the public.

"Apple will become the phone of choice for the pedophile," said John J, Escalante, chief of detectives for Chicago's police department. "The average pedophile at this point is probably thinking, I've got to get an Apple phone."
