Sleep Deprivation Leads to Cranky Kids, New Study Show

The reason for youth crankiness and laziness is lack of sleep and not attitude problems, said a new study published in the journal, Learning, Media and Technology.
Researchers said bad attitudes among the young are caused by sleep deprivation linked to waking up early for school. They explained a person's ability to function optimally varies with biological time rather than conventional social time.

Life would be a lot easier if teenagers slept early the way they did in their early years of education, according to researchers.
This could be harder today because of drastic changes during adolescence, especially the underlying conflict between social and biological time.
Researchers said that the proper human sleep-wake cycle comes from the balance between alertness and sleepiness that can be regulated in the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus in the brain.
When a child hits puberty, however, his body clock shifts, making it difficult for him to sleep before 11:00 pm.
This becomes a problem because children have to go to school early in the morning. Therefore, children tend to be cranky because of sleep deprivation.
According to researchers, altering school schedules won't only perk up the mood of teens but also enhances their ability to learn.
