Ma changed the topic immediately to the recent Hong Kong protest. He said he cared about Hong Kong's situation as the world did and he would like to share the government's opinion.
The Taiwanese president expressed his total support and understanding for Hong Kong's fight for democracy. Taiwan has been implementing democratic election for a long time and many Hong Kong citizens have witnessed that democracy, he said.
Hong Kong is an important global financial center and any political turmoil there will affect Asia and the whole world, Ma stated. He then called on Mainland China to heed Hong Kong's request and address the issue peacefully and carefully.
As for the Hong Kong residents, Ma urged them to express their appeals peacefully and rationally to avoid conflict.
"We believe it will be win-win for both Mainland China and Hong Kong if Hong Kong achieves the general election," The Taiwanese leader concluded.
Jiang Yi-huah, currently the Premier of the Republic of China, said the stability of Hong Kong as the important financial center of Asia would be disrupted if the issue dragged on.
