Microsoft intends to provide the public a glimpse of its vision for Windows within the week as CEO Satya Nadella attempts to redefine the firm and redeem itself from past mistakes by launching its newest operating system.

The software company is expected to offer a sneak peek at a number of new features during an event on Tuesday. Microsoft has advertised the event as a dialogue regarding "what's next for Windows."

Microsoft hasn't disclosed the new name of its OS, which goes by the codename Threshold.

The operating system is currently still in development and won't be released until 2015 but analysts are already saying its success is crucial for Microsoft and Nadella, who has made Internet-based services and mobile devices the firm's priorities since taking the helm in February

Windows 8 with its touch controls akin to a tablet has been the company's response to poor sales in the computer department in the midst of a rising market for mobile devices. The firm, however, pushed away a number of users by forcing drastic behavioral changes.

Research firm IDC has even blamed the most recent operating system for speeding up a drop in computer sales in the three months after the platform hit the shelves in October 2012.

Although Microsoft offered updates to address some of the bugs in the OS, analytics company Net Applications said five of six Windows users are using another version instead of the Windows 8.

Microsoft's chance to regain its footing lies with the next major release. It's got to show it can work on mobile devices without having to sacrifice its computer projects.

"It's one of the most important launches that they will ever have," said Patrick Moorhead at the research firm Moor Insights and Strategy. "It's very important they get it right."
