Wild card entry Tatsuma Ito of Japan shocked Stan Wawrinka, and Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny eliminated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Ito, 26, got a chance to break the top seed Wawrinka at 5-all and grabbed the opportunity to serve out the first set.

The Australian Open champion tried to stage a comeback in the second set but the Japanese was in form as he broke Wawrinka three times to finish the set and claim the match 7-5 6-2.

"It was not a good day at the office," Wawrinka said. "He started well, and then I was trying to come back in the match. First-round matches are never easy."

This is the first time in Ito's career where he defeated a top 5 player, and now he is an instant celebrity in his hometown.

"I tried my best on every point, and I was very focused," Ito said. "I was a little nervous, but I stuck to my game, and I finished well."

The 29-year-old Swiss only needed to make the finals of the event in order to clinch a spot at the year-ending ATP World Tour Finals but still has a chance to claim that spot at the Shanghai Rolex Masters slated to start Oct. 6.

Fifth seeded Tsonga suffered a tough three set loss against Polish qualifier as Przysiezny fought back after losing the first set and edged out the Frenchman in the third set tie-break 4-6 7-5 7(11)-6(9).

Przysiezny is set to fight it off against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the second round.

Tsonga's most memorable tournament was at the Rogers Cup in Toronto last August where he defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Britain's No. 1 Andy Murray, Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to claim the crown.

Third seeded Milos Raonic also saw action on Tuesday, winning his opener against Australian Bernard Tomic 7(7)-6(3) 6-3 and now faces Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the next round.
