A spokesman for the Commerce Department's International Trade Administration said has not denied nor confirmed that the meeting will be hedl in Chicago this year but sources said planning is underway for the city to host the meeting.
The powerhouse get-together usually alternates each year between a city in the US and China, where trade officials organized in various working groups map out agreements and memoranda to further enhance China-US trade and discuss ways to defuse trade disputes.
On the sideline, business-to-business meetings are expected to take place during the gathering, which is expected to be attended by the US Commerce Secretary, China's vice premier for foreign trade, and the secretaries of agriculture of both countries.
The decision to hold the summit in Chicago bodes well with the city's effort to further entice Chinese investors.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently went to China to sign partnership deals between his city and eight cities in the mainland.
China is the third largest trading partner of the state of Illinois. Canada and Mexico continue to be the top two trading partners of the state.
Chicago is also a major recipient of real estate investments and other businesses from China.
The Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade is co-chaired by the U.S. Commerce Secretary, former Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker, and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, along with China's vice premier for foreign trade.
