Classes at a North Carolina high school have been suspended on Tuesday following a shooting incident involving two students, where one has been injured while the other was taken into custody for assault charges.

At around 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities received a report of an active shooter at Albemarle High School after two male students reportedly argued leading to one being shot and the other getting arrested.

The victim, identified as 17-year-old Bernard Miller, received two gunshot wounds--one in the hip and another along his lower abdomen--after a 15-year-old student pulled a gun from his waistband and shot him in an on-campus courtyard.

The juvenile gunman, who was not identified by authorities because he is a minor, had surrendered his firearm to the principal and turned himself in following the incident.

He was immediately arrested by responding law enforcers and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in juvenile court, Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton told Reuters.

Halliburton clarified that the shooting did not pose a bigger threat to the campus citing it as an isolated incident.

"This was a personal, one-on-one confrontation," he stated.

Since classes have not begun in the school located about 40 miles northeast of Charlotte prior to the shooting, students were advised to vacate the premises.

School officials announced a school suspension for the rest of the day on Tuesday and have not made any decision whether to have classes resume by Wednesday.

Witness Brittany Montgomery, a student in the school, said she had heard students arguing and then three gunshots adding that a friend of hers broke down while she was attending to the wounded victim.

"I told her to calm down. He's going to be OK. He's just shot in the leg," she explained.

Reports stated that the victim had undergone surgery and is already in stable condition.

According to Halliburton, a school shooting drill held a few months ago had helped them deal with Tuesday's incident.
