NASA's Cassini spacecraft has been monitoring one of Saturn's moons, Titan, where a mysterious feature or a "mysterious island" can be seen floating on the moon's massive hydrocarbon sea.

This strange object was seen by Cassini on July 2013 during a flyby of Titan. This mystery island reappeared again in August 2013. Measurements show the island is apparently 100 square miles across and is floating on Titan's largest sea, Ligeia Mare.

Radar imagery clearly shows this mysterious feature standing out in high contrast to the dark sea where nothing like this has ever been manifested before. Scientists have already ruled out this odd feature is caused by sea evaporation because Ligeia Mare's shoreline hasn't shown any drastic changes.

The object disappeared over the course of seven months, baffling scientists but on August 21, 2014 the object reappeared but its appearance changed again within 11 months.

Researchers are baffled by this phenomenon and believe this object could probably be surface waves or even bubbles rising to the surface. Some scientists say it could also be large solid clumps made from something exotic floating together.

The re-emergence of this odd feature could also indicate the changing seasons on Titan.

According to Stephen Wall, deputy team lead of Cassini's radar team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, this feature looks like an omipresent change on Titan. The team is hopeful they'll be able to observe these remarkable changes unfold amidst the alien sea.

Scientists and researchers are confident they can solve the mystery during Cassini's extended mission.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a collaborative project involving NASA, the European Space Agency, ASI and the Italian Space Agency. It was launched in 1997 after decades of intensive development, finally arriving at Jupiter in 2004.

The spacecraft carries a Saturn probe and lander called Huygens that entered Titan's orbit in 2005.
