No Kansas Democrat on Ballot, But Democrats Cheer Ruling

A Kansas court ruled against a lawsuit forcing the state's Democratic Party to have a candidate in the election, but Kansas Democrats are actually celebrating the ruling.

The ruling increased independent candidate Greg Orman's chances of defeating Senator Pat Roberts. The outcome also presents more chances of having a non-Republican win the Senator, making it more difficult for Republicans to win a controlling seat in the Senate, The Huffington Post explained.

The Democrats' joy in the court ruling demonstrates how desperate their party is to gain control of the Senate, the report added.

Along with Orman and Roberts, a third candidate, Libertarian Randall Batson, is also running in the election.

With a five-point advantage over Roberts, Orman's chances of winning are quite good for now. However, Republicans have begun to exert considerable effort to secure Robert's seat. They are soliciting support from big names and funnelling in money for his campaign.

Orman's situation looks like the beginning of a new trend of independent candidates entering the Senate and disrupting the balance of power, the report said.

Launching a statewide campaign without a solid party to back a candidate is very difficult. Roberts has the Republican Party to support him, but Orman does not have this kind of support, and any backing from the Democrats might just backfire, the report said.

Roberts, who presently does not own a house in Kansas, is seen as a representative of Washington, while Orman is seen as an outsider seeking to enter Washington. Since Robert's Tea Party victory was closely-fought, the latter's organizations in Kansas are not very eager to give their support to him. In addition, Orman just got the chance to run because a Democratic candidate opted out of the race.

All these things make Kansas' situation so unique that it likely will not happen in other states.

If Roberts does not become the deciding vote, the parties will not be exerting much effort to get his vote in their caucus even if he wins in the election. There is also no guarantee that an Independent candidate will turn out to be the deciding vote, either, the report stated.
