The group of knife-wielding "terrorists" that stormed the Kunming train station on Saturday night included two women, based on accounts of police and witnesses at the crime scene.
Responding police shot dead four of the attackers, one of them a woman, and arrested another female suspect, state media said. About five more attackers fled and are still being hunted, the reports said.
The arrested female suspect was wounded in the police chase and was brought to hospital for treatment. Her testimony will serve as key to unearthing the motive behind the hacking spree that killed more than 28 people and wounded more than a hundred others.
Pieces of evidence were being collected by Kunming police from the crime scene on Sunday, including some long blood-stained knives used by the attackers to hack, slash and stab people at random.
One photo of the crime scene showed an attacker wearing a badge with a star and crescent, a known Islamic symbol which is also used by the East Turkestan terrorist organization.
The Kunming government on Saturday said the "terrorist attack was carried out by Xinjiang separatist forces."
Xinhua news agency said evidence showed it was "an organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack by Uighur separatists", citing the Kunming government.
Witnesses said the attackers were dressed in black, carried long knives, and some had covered faces. A witness named Zuo Ruxing said the attackers kept moving around and attacked people at random, one person at a time.
Another witness named Mr. Tan said he saw police transporting a wounded child in an ambulance after the child's parents and grandfather were hacked to death, indicating that the attackers targeted children and old people alike.
