Kunming Attack: How 200 Lives Were Saved

It was business-as-usual for Chongqing Restaurant at Kunming's Train Station as it opened on March 2, a day after the fatal "terrorist" attack that killed at least 28 people and wounded more than a hundred others.
But restaurant owner Fang Chen, who had emerged as a hero during the crucial moments of the attack, was still suffering from shock.

Chen had been busy attending to customers at 9 P.M. on March 1st when suddenly, there was a disturbance from the train station plaza. Chen learned that mobsters were killing people with knives after a traveler ran to the restaurant dragging a suitcase.
Within seconds, more people began swarming in the direction of the restaurant. Inside, customers stopped eating and hid in corners. Outside, fleeing shoeless travelers dragged suitcases as they ran around looking for cover.
Chen, realizing the gravity of the situation, called on people to come into the restaurant. The 80-square meter restaurant was soon filled with people, some standing on tables, benches and on the cooking counter, the women and children crying, and the men confused and helpless. Chen asked her staff to close the roller shutter door.
"There were too many people, but the restaurant did not have enough capacity to have all the people in." Chen still felt helpless as she recounted the incident.
Chen said that there were over 200 people inside the restaurant. She opened the roller shutter door around 10 P.M. to let out the people she had given temporary refuge to.
Many have applauded Chen's heroic generosity. "Those mobs were too cruel. They did not let off on common people. My ability is limited; I just tried my best to save lives. I believe other people would do the same thing," Chen said humbly.
