NBA Wants to Change Draft Lottery System to Discourage Tanking

Zach Lowe, a staff writer from Grantland, reported that the National Basketball Association (NBA) is thinking of changing its lottery draft system to discourage tanking from teams. The discussion has been abuzz throughout the summer.

The draft lottery system of the NBA is structured so that it favors the team with the worst record, giving them a 25 percent chance of winning the number one draft pick.

The second worst record has an almost 20 percent chance, and almost 16 percent for the third worst record. The pattern goes on for the teams with the improving records.

For many NBA team owners and General Managers, they operate under the belief that if they aren't contenders in the current season, there is no point in winning, as a number one draft pick is much more favorable.

This probably why tanking - or losing on purpose - has been on the rise in recent years, giving teams the hope of a fruitful rebuilding process.

Several suggestions have been thrown around, with the most popular one being the worst four or six teams in the NBA are each given an 11 percent chance.

The odds decrease from there, with the number one team having a two percent chance to win the number one draft pick, as opposed to the .5 percent it had before.

The NBA is following the footsteps of the National Hockey League (NHL) that wanted to change their draft lottery process for the same reason.

Much like the NBA, the teams with the worst records in the NHL had increased chances of getting the first round draft pick. Operating under the same belief, teams would also tank to get the pick.

They have revised their draft system, with it coming into fruition fully on 2016.
