A report from the Associated Press said the mayor’s wife, Levette Crespo, was not apprehended or charged with any criminal offence. The report added the 45-year old mayor was declared dead shortly upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
The AP report said the community of the quiet suburb was shocked upon hearing the news and was in grief. Bell Gardens is known to be a well-maintained and normally peaceful community
Mayor Crespo’s neighbors were in awe after hearing the news of his tragic death. Florence Chavez told the Associated Press that the mayor was a great person and often talks with residents while walking around the community.
Margarita Rios, Crepo’s neighbor, also said similar words about the mayor. She said Crespo was very friendly and a good man, reported AP.
Deputy Sheriff Crystal Hernandez said authorities think the couple was having a fight. However, when their 19-year old son tried to break them, he had a physical tussle with his father. It was not clear how Levette Crespo got a gun and started shooting her husband, reported AP.
Authorities said they were able to interview Daniel Crespo Jr. while Levette was taken under police custody and was later released without being charged of any crime. Homicide detectives conducted an interview with Mrs. Crespo and said no arrest would be made at the moment. The statement was released late Tuesday adding the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will determine the filing of criminal charges after presenting facts of the case.
