Computer security researchers recently discovered a computer virus known as Xsser, a spyware that steals user information from Apple's iOS operating system for the iPhone and iPad devices.
They believe the new virus is targeting pro-democracy Hong Kong protesters.
Researchers came across Xsser while investigating a similar virus last week that also targeted protesters using Google's Android operating system.

They said Xsser has the ability to steal user data such as text messages, passwords, photos, call logs and other information.
The spyware virus is one of the most sophisticated malware used to attack iOS devices, researchers said.
"This is one of the most interesting developments we have seen," said Michael Shaulov, Chief Executive of Lacoon Mobile Security. It also indicates the shift of attack from PCs and laptops to mobile devices.
Shaulov said the code that controls the server is written in Chinese, and the fact that it targets the protesters in Hong Kong, suggests that the virus came from within China.
"It can cross borders easily, and is possibly being operated by a Chinese-speaking entity to spy on individuals, foreign companies, or even entire governments," researchers from the Lacoon Mobile Security team said.
