Agriculture Official: No Sharp Increase in Food Imports

China has enough domestic resources to feed the nation and will not drastically increase its food importation, Agriculture Minister Han Changfu told reporters at a press conference of the 2nd session of the 12th CPPCC on Thursday.
Han is confident that the country's grain yield will remain consistent with the 10-year projected growth figures.

This, he said, is primarily due to the fact that the central government has been giving top priority to food production and food security.
The contribution rate of agricultural technology to domestic food production has reached 55% and will be increased, Han added.
China's basic agricultural facility has been proven capable of riding out natural disasters, with its irrigated land now at 51% and the level of agriculture mechanization at 58%, Han said.
Although China had increased its food importation in recent years, Han said the aggregate amount was still moderate. Food imports reached 13 million tons last year, which was 2.4 % of domestic consumption.
China could not rely on large amounts of import because the quantity of the world's grain trade is only half of China's grain yield, Han explained.
The key point in the government's food strategy, Han stressed, is to rely on domestic resources, ensure sufficient supply, import just the right amount, and utilize technology to support production.
