K.J. McDaniels, the 32nd overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft for the Philadelphia 76ers, is making a unique move for his rookie contract.
The 76ers usually offer rookies a structured contract with two guaranteed contract seasons, and two non-guaranteed seasons in the player's third and fourth years.

While this sort of set-up had been successfully used by the 76ers when they want to control young player's services, or when they want to turn their contracts into valuable bargaining chips.
However, this did not sit well with McDaniels and his agent Mark Bartelstein.
Bartelstein stated that they respect the philosophy that the 76ers adheres to, but that it just doesn't fit him and his client.
"We think K.J. is going to be a good player," he said, "and it came down to doing a one-year deal and letting the market determine his value.
Instead, the two made a bold decision regarding McDaniels' rookie contract, agreeing to a one-year, non-guaranteed tender that could eventually lead him to being an unrestricted free agent next July.
This would mean that the talented McDaniles whose offensive capabilities got him to the NBA, could be facing significant offers in July that the 76ers need to match in order to re-sign him.
Moreover, the 76ers will need to guarantee McDaniels U.S. $1.2 million next season to make the qualifying offer to become a restricted free agent, as opposed to losing him as an unrestricted free agent.
While McDaniels will only be pulling in U.S. $507,000 this season, the looming U.S. $1.2 million next season is more than any second-round pics are currently scheduled to make.
