For his part, President Obama also informed Xi of the US stance in the current situation in Ukraine, although the Xinhua report did not elaborate on the stand of the US.
Xi, however, stressed that all parties involved in the current crisis in Ukraine would resort to political and diplomatic means to solve the crisis.
Xi has met Obama twice last year, where they discussed means to bring the China-US relationship to the next level.
During the telephone conversation, Xi told Obama that he was looking forward to their next meeting and welcome the upcoming visit of the first lady, Michele Obama, to China.
The US first lady is set to travel to China this month for a trip focused on education.
The first lady, who will embark on her first China visit with her daughters, will focus on the importance of education in her own life and the lives of young people in both the US and China.
She will make stops in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on 20-23 March; Xi'an on 24 March, and Chengdu on 25-26 March.
Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha will visit important historical and cultural sites, a university and high school in Beijing and a high school in Chengdu, the office of the First Lady announced.
For his part, President Obama said he also expects to meet President Xi soon and that the First Lady is also looking forward to her visit to China.
