The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed the news that the now-defunct lifeguard series, "Baywatch", will be adapted to the big screen and, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be playing the role of lifeguard captain.

Johnson took to Instagram to announce the news by posting a photo of himself (and his rock-hard abs) riding atop a jetski. He captioned it with "This is my beach bitch! 'Rumours are true... we're making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo."

Despite Paramount confirming that a "Baywatch" movie is in the works, pre-production is said to be going very slow, and the main reason for the delay is the script. Producers and writers are said to be in contention as to what route to take when it comes to the storyline. The current debacle is said to be about having the plot revolve around drug smuggling and shark attacks.

The movie, unlike the series which focused more on dramatic storylines, will be more of a tongue-in-cheek comedy.

Although there hasn't been any word on whether or not the television series' stars, such as David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Nicole Eggert, will be appearing in the movie, what is definite is that the flick's location will still be the iconic golden coast of Los Angeles.

"Baywatch" first premiered on NBC in 1989, but was cancelled after one season.

Although the show was hardly what critics would call as award-winning, actor David Hasselhoff along with creators and executive producers Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonann felt that the show still had potential despite dismal ratings.

Hasselhoff and company then revived it for the first-run syndication market in 1991. Hasselhoff was then given the title of executive producer for bringing the show back on air.

The strategy paid off and the series became hugely successful both in the United States and internationally.
