A major fire in Flight 93 National Memorial in central Pennsylvania has destroyed four administrative buildings and several 9/11 artifacts, officials said Friday.

Among the buildings ravaged by the fire was the superintendent's office, which served as the park's headquarters, National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said.

According to Litterst, the construction of the visitors center and the memorial, which was about 2 miles away from the site was not affected by the fire.

During a media conference late Friday, Flight 93 memorial superintendent Jeff Reinbold, said the fire began near a trailer with its own kitchen, though officials have yet to confirm whether the fire started inside the trailer or beside it.

Litterst said that the employees and volunteers of the center had been evacuated and there were no reported injuries caused by the incident.

The Flight 93 site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, is the place where the United Airlines Flight 93 crashed during the 9/11  terrorist attacks.

The plane travelling to San Francisco crashed at a strip mine, killing all 33 passengers who fought back against the plane's hijackers.

According to reports, about 10 percent of the artifacts of the flight, which were in the burned buildings, were damaged.

However, several proof safes and cabinets were in the storage buildings that were heavily damaged by the fire.

Officials said that the Medal of Honor given to the victims of the flight in September remained safe.

However, the status of the flag that flew over the Capitol building on Sept. 11, 2001 was still unknown.

The flag was brought to the memorial to be installed at the visitors center, and was at one of the buildings affected by the fire.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
