Chinese actor Hu Ge says that his idol drama career may end after the release of 'Sound of the Desert', saying that he is no longer as 'beautiful' as he had been before.

Hu Ge's period romance drama 'Sound of the Desert' has finally debuted on Hunan TV last October 1 after waiting for two years of approval from authorities that banned the broadcast of the drama as it allegedly had inappropriate content.

In the drama, which also features actress Cecilia Liu, Hu Ge plays the role of Mo Xun, a disabled physician. Mo Xun is said to be Hu Ge's most recognizable role throughout his career.

However, Hu Ge says he thinks that the drama will end his career as an idol drama actor, citing that he is older than the character in the original novel, saying, "I've already gone through my time as a youth, and I'm no longer beautiful."

The actor, who turned 32 years old last month, says that he has acted in many ancient idol dramas in the past, adding that the public has already seen his handsome side. Hu Ge expressed that he wished to show other sides of him as well.

Based on media reports, the most surprising thing about his role in the drama is that he had maintained a goatee the whole time. It was the first time that he will be sporting facial hair for a role he is playing.

According to the actor, he wanted to shave off the goatee in order for him to look younger at the Seoul International Drama Awards in early September where he was a recipient of the People's Choice Award. However, he was not allowed to do so.

He shared that it had been an embarrassing experience during the awards since he forgot the Korean words he had rehearsed prior to the event.

Hu Ge might have had setbacks in the past, but he said he is set to make the world see him as a bona fide actor.

"Actors can't be merely eye candy otherwise, they would just be models," says Hu Ge, adding that entertainers need to think of their viewers as well.
