Actor-comedian Steve Martin was chosen to be the recipient of the American Film Institute's 2014 Lifetime Achievement award.

Martin, 69, will be the second comedian to receive the prestigious award, which was first awarded in 1973 to Mel Brooks, who has also won an Emmy, a Grammy, and an Oscar award.

"Steve Martin is an American original," said Howard Stringer of AFI's board of trustees.

Martin, who was born in Texas, is famously known for the iconic live-action adaptations of "The Pink Panther".

He appeared in movies such as "The Jerk" in 1979, "Bowfinger" in 1999, and "Shopgirl", which was released in 2005.

He has also written for the popular TV series "Just for Laughs". Martin will also be in the upcoming Disney movie "Magic Camp", where he took part in writing the screenplay with writer-director Stu Zicherman.

The actor rose from the ranks of the comedy genre by first performing magic tricks at Disneyland and then becoming a writer for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in 1969, for which he won an Emmy award.

Martin is also a talented musician who plays the banjo and the piano, and has won five Grammy awards for the bluegrass and comedy categories.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given at a gala come June 2015, and will be televised on Turner Broadcasting's TNT.
