A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office, said they have been supporting Bolam's family following the abduction, and were happy that they have finally reunited.

She added that the family has asked for privacy.

Bolam's colleague at Libya's International School Benghazi, Ged O'Connor Challis, said he was "stubborn" and decided to stay in Libya despite the growing threat of terrorism in the country.

In an interview with the BBC, Challis said he was speaking to Bolam on the phone on the morning that he was taken.

On August 28, the militants released a video online of Bolam pleading to U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron for his release.

The video showed Bolam disheveled and wearing a white shirt.

He was shown begging Cameron to agree to a hostage exchange for his release so he could return to his family.

"I am a British teacher, my health is good at the moment, I have been here a very long time," Bolam said in the video.

In addition, he begged his family and friends to help urge the British government to allow him to go home soon.

"Please do something to help me," he said.

In the video, Bolan mentioned the prison swap between American soldier Bowe Berghadl with five Afghan Taliban officials.

According to reports, Bolan's release was processed by local Libyan officials and the exchange of money happened between unofficial channel, as Britain is against paying ransom for British hostages.
