Google to Launch Large-Scale Video Screen Displays

Google X, Google's advanced-projects lab, is working on Lego-like screens that combine to form a gigantic seamless display.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this Google X project consists of smaller screens made in different sizes and shapes. These smaller pieces are connected together to build a large-scale display.

Google's alleged modular display appears to be bigger than the largest screen today, which measures 110 inches diagonally.

Mary Lou Jensen, a former professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and One Laptop per Child project co-founder, leads the Google X secret display project along with veteran engineers from Samsung Electronics Co. and Qualcomm Inc.

The scope, target market and the motive behind this modular display project is unclear because the Google X team is currently in an early stage of project development, sources said.

Apart from the technical challenges faced by Google X, another problem they're also trying to solve is making the display modules "seamless".

A member of the Google X team said the big challenge for them is "doing the stitching between the seams electronically and through software."

The project team is trying to get more display professionals to work on the problem.

The Google research lab may be getting help from Gecko Design, Inc., a mechanical engineering and product design firm the Internet-search giant acquired last August, reports confirmed.
